Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan til age 15 and being the active kid that Bryan
was, his parents thought it would be a great idea for him to beat on drums to get his
“energy out”. Bryan's early influences were the drummers of Motown, Hal Blaine,
Charlie Martin (Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band), Ted Nugent, Danny Seraphine
(Chicago), Ed Shaughnessy, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Ron Bushy, Mick Fleetwood,
& Ringo Starr. Lessons at the time didn't work, Bryan wanted to play drums and make
music, not bang on a rubber practice pad ("I didn't see the value at the time, Hey, I
was only 7"). Just a few years later he attended a lounge performance of “Cabaret” in
Chicago where he found inspiration to further pursue drums when he was given the
drummer’s pair of sticks from the show.
(That was cool!)
In 1978, Bryan and his family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. Bryan was still very
active in sports, mainly football. However, it was at this time in his life that he started to
realize the importance of a music education. After blowing a High School music
audition because he couldn’t read music, he decided it was time for professional
instruction. Drumming influences at this time expanded to John Bonham,
Nick Mason, Neil Peart, Keith Moon, Phil Collins, Simon Phillips, Steve Smith,
Liberty DeVitto, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro,Jim Gordon, Russ Kunkel,
Tommy Aldridge,Alex Van Halen, Joey Kramer, Max Weinberg, Phil Ehart, Larrie
Londin, Anton Fig, Omar Hakim, and Charlie Adams.
The pivotal source of education, inspiration and encouragement came when Bryan
attended several drum clinics at “The Creative Drum Shop” (Scottsdale, AZ). The
clinics Bryan attended featured Louie Bellson, Steve Smith, Alex Acuna, Rod
Morgenstein, Gerry Brown, Ed Thigpen, J.R. Robinson, Peter Magadini and “Texas”
Tim Root. Jim Zupanzic (Owner of The Creative Drum Shop) encouraged Bryan to
start reading a new magazine out called “Modern Drummer” and start taking private
lessons at his shop. Jim introduced Bryan to Cleve Huff ( a first call drummer in the
Phoenix, Az area) who took him under his wing ("Thank's Cleve") and later recruited
Bryan into the Scottsdale Community College Music program under the direction of
Dr. Bud Sessions. Bryan's drumming influence's grew to include Max Roach,
Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Joe La Barbera, Peter Erskine, Terry Bozzio,
Vinnie Colaiuta, Mickey Curry, Harvey Mason, Dave Weckl, Mark Craney and
Chad Wackerman. Lately, I've been Inspired by Todd Sucherman, Daniel Glass,
Vinnie (always),Virgil Donati, Dennis Chambers, Lenny White, Papa Joe Jones,
Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Simon Phillips, Eric Singer & Mike Mangini.
Kenny Aronoff, Winston Watson and Joey "Kramedog" Kramer
(I'll be getting his book "Hit Man") due out in June 2009.
Bryan studied music theory and performed in several bands at the College including;
The Jazz Band, Jazz Trio’s & Jazz Quartet’s, Orchestra, and Marching Band.
Bryan played percussion and drums for the following musicals while at the College;
“Cinderella”, “Pirates of Penzantz”, “’Lil Abner”, and “Ain’t Misbehavin’”.
“Being able to read music and chart out tunes really helped jump
start my professional drumming career".
It was also at this time that Bryan got introduced to Country and Western when he
received a call from singer/songwriter J. Fraley who lived in Pine, Arizona. "J" had
taught his girlfriend, Margo Vohn, to play Bass and needed a drummer to complete
their Country Trio they called “Buffalo Hump”. They got Bryan’s number from the
Creative Drum Shop (it pays to hang out at your local drum shop or music store).
Their first gig was at Kohls Ranch near the Mogollon Rim,
(pronounced mo-gee-on), which led to many other performances in the area, not to
mention Phoenix and Scottsdale.
A year or so later Bryan joined another Band out of Payson, Arizona. “Pure Country”.
He sat in with them at a jam session at the Chalet in Strawberry Arizona using just a
hi-hat and a snare (eventually, he worked in his whole kit). They played at The Swiss
Village, Pete’s Place, The Winchester, The Natural Bridge, Sedona, Cottonwood, and
many other local spots.
Bryan moved back to Scottsdale and started private lessons with Cleve Huff again
and also a few lessons from Peter Magadini. At this point in his career he was playing
all styles of music. Once again, through a recommendation from the Creative Drum
Shop, Bryan received a call from a local singer/songwriter, Mark Wood, who was
looking for a drummer for two New Year's Eve shows at the Grand Canyon. Bryan
auditioned and got the job. The band played tunes by Led Zeppelin, The Police, The
Beatles, Genesis, Boston, ZZ Top, Doobie Brothers, Eric Clapton, and many other
Rock classics as well as Mark's newly recorded originals. This is when I studied
Carmine's playing on the classic "You Keep Me Hanging On" by Vanilla Fudge.
Today, after over twenty years of friendship and a move to the West Coast, you can
still catch Bryan performing with Mark in several of his groups for Summer Concerts
and Special Events through out Southern California and the United States.
In 1985, Bryan moved to Southern California to further pursue his music career. He
immediately joined a Band called “Music By Numbers” (With Mark Wood on
Guitar & Vocals) performing original music in Hollywood at such clubs as “The Roxy”,
“The Whisky”, “The Troubadour”, and “FM Station”. Over the years Bryan continued to
perform locally in Southern California while also managing to find other bands and
various performing and recording situations to further his career.
In 1992 Bryan answered an ad in the "Recycler". The ad read “Band seeking
record deal looking for drummer to tour and record”. That Band became
"Wishbone". While continuing to play with other groups and artists, Wishbone
became Bryan’s main focus. They recorded their 1st album and signed their first
record deal soon after with Columns Disc ( a European Label) which led to a 2 album
deal in South America on the TenderFoot Label and distributed through Elap.
As changes occurred in the Wishbone camp, Bryan met Bass player
Bart Broadnax. Bart had just become the Musical Director for a 9 piece R&B band
that needed a drummer. Bart called Bryan and asked if he would be interested. Bryan
auditioned and got the job. "Stonebridge" performed at corporate events and
concerts locally in Southern California and around the Country. Bryan has played
events such as the "Taste of Newport", "Taste of L.A.", "Fashion Island Concert
Series", Long Beach Grand Prix, "Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series",
OMBAC in San Diego, The Redondo Beach Lobster Festival, and the "Redondo
Beach Performing Arts Center"(just to name a few). Plus, numerous charitable events.
Bryan has also had the great pleasure of warming up for; The Pointer Sister's,
George Benson, Rick Springfield, Sammy Kershaw, Dokken, Great White,
George Lynch, Testament, Wild Child, Royal Crown Revue, Kim Carnes, & The
Nelson Brother's. Some of the Hotels Bryan has performed at include; Ritz Carlton,
Four Seasons,The Island, Montage, St. Regis, Balboa Bay Club,La Quinta , Embassy
Suites,The Omni, Golden Nugget, Harrah's, Caesar's Palace (Atlantic City),
Hyatt Hotels, PGA West, Hotel Del Coronado and many other's around the U.S.A.
Currently, Bryan resides in Southern California and performs and records with various
